What Is an Instrument Approach, and Why Do Pilots Choose Between Them?

Picture this. You have been flying for an hour, the clouds have moved in low, and the airport you are headed to is somewhere below a solid gray layer you cannot see through. You cannot just look down and line up with the runway. So how do you land?


That is the exact problem an instrument approach solves, and it is one of the most satisfying skills a pilot ever learns. Recently we read a training scenario built around a familiar situation: a pilot arrives to find the weather is not quite what the forecast promised, the airport has several approaches available, and each one comes with its own mix of advantages and trade offs. The question posed was simple. Which one would you request?


If you are just starting to think about flying, that question probably sounds like a foreign language. Let us fix that. By the end of this you will understand what an instrument approach is, why one airport can have several, and how good pilots actually make the call.


What is an instrument approach in plain English?


An instrument approach is a published, step by step procedure that guides an airplane safely down from the clouds to a point where the pilot can see the runway and land. Think of it as a set of invisible stairs in the sky, each step at a specific altitude and location, that leads you down through the weather in a way that keeps you clear of terrain, towers, and other traffic.


The whole idea rests on instruments instead of eyeballs. When you cannot see the ground, you fly by reference to the gauges and navigation equipment in the panel, following precise headings and altitudes until you break out of the clouds with the runway in front of you.


An instrument approach is really just a set of invisible stairs in the sky, each step at a known altitude, leading you safely down through the weather.

This is the heart of the instrument rating, the certificate a pilot earns after the private pilot license to legally and safely fly in the clouds. In a place like Middle Tennessee, where a beautiful morning can turn into a low overcast by afternoon, that rating is the difference between staying home and getting where you are going.


Why does one airport have more than one approach?


Here is where it gets interesting. A single runway can have several different published approaches to it, and a busy airport with multiple runways can have a whole menu of them. There are a few reasons for this.


Some approaches use different equipment. Some line up with different runways so you can land into the wind. And some can bring you lower toward the ground than others before you need to see the runway, which matters a lot on a truly cloudy day.


Broadly, approaches fall into two families:


  • Precision and vertical guidance approaches. These give you both left to right steering and a smooth, guided path down, almost like an invisible glide slope you follow to the runway. They typically let you descend the lowest before needing to see the ground.

  • Non precision approaches. These guide you left and right but do not give you that smooth vertical path. You step down to specified altitudes instead, and you usually need better visibility to complete them.


The equipment matters too. Modern GPS based approaches have opened up instrument access to smaller airports all over Tennessee that never had fancy ground based equipment. That is a genuinely good story for general aviation, because it means more places to land safely when the weather is marginal.


So how does a pilot actually choose?


This is the real skill, and it is less about memorizing rules and more about clear thinking. When a pilot arrives and finds the ceiling lower than expected, they are weighing several things at once.


How low can this approach take me?


Every approach has a minimum altitude, a point where if you cannot see the runway environment, you must not go any lower. If the clouds are sitting at a level below one approach's minimums but above another's, that alone can decide the question. You pick the approach that gives you the best chance of seeing the runway.


Which way is the wind blowing?


Airplanes like to land into the wind. An approach that lines you up with a stiff tailwind is a poor choice even if everything else looks good. Sometimes the lowest, most capable approach serves the wrong runway for the day's wind, and a pilot accepts slightly higher minimums to land safely into the breeze.


What is my workload, and what is my out?


Some approaches are simpler to fly than others. A pilot flying alone in bumpy clouds might choose the more straightforward procedure to keep their mental workload manageable. And every good instrument pilot always knows the answer to one question before they start down: what will I do if I get to the bottom and still cannot see the runway? That plan, the missed approach, is decided before you ever begin the descent.


The best pilots decide what they will do if the approach does not work out before they ever start down. The plan comes first.

Why does this matter if I am not even a pilot yet?


Because it shows you what flying is really about. A lot of newcomers imagine flying is mostly about hands and feet, the physical act of controlling the airplane. That part matters, and it comes faster than most people expect. But the deeper skill, the one that keeps pilots safe for decades, is judgment. It is the habit of gathering information, weighing options, and making a calm decision with a clear backup plan.


You start building that habit on your very first lessons, long before you ever touch the clouds. When we teach a student to decide whether the crosswind is too strong today, or whether that line of storms to the west means we stay in the pattern instead of heading to the practice area, that is the same muscle a seasoned instrument pilot uses to pick an approach. Good decision making is a skill you train, not a talent you are born with.


When would I learn all of this?


The instrument rating comes after your private pilot certificate, so nobody expects a brand new student to worry about approach minimums on day one. Here is a simple way to think about the path.


  • Private pilot first. You learn to fly the airplane, navigate, talk on the radio, and make good decisions in visual conditions.

  • Instrument rating next. You add the ability to fly in clouds and low visibility, flying precise procedures by reference to your instruments, including the approaches we described.

  • Then whatever you dream of. Some pilots stop with these two and fly for fun and travel for the rest of their lives. Others keep going toward commercial flying and an aviation career.


Keep in mind that specific requirements, minimum hours, medical certificates, and costs all change over time and vary from person to person. Your instructor and the current FAA standards are always the right place to confirm the details for your situation.
