How Did Pilots Ever Find Their Way? What Student Pilots in Middle Tennessee Still Learn About Navigation

Picture a pilot in the 1950s, cruising over Tennessee farmland with a paper chart folded across one knee, a pencil, a watch, and a whole lot of confidence. No moving map. No little airplane symbol showing exactly where they were. Just their own two eyes, the ground below, and some careful math done before they ever started the engine.


How did they ever get there?


It is a fair question, and a fun one. Because the honest answer is that they got there with skills we still teach today, right here at Smyrna. Modern airplanes have wonderful technology, and we love it. But the foundation underneath all of it is the same foundation pilots have used for a hundred years. Let us walk through how navigation actually works, why the old ways still matter, and what all of this looks like when you are the one in the left seat.


What did pilots use before GPS?


Long before a satellite could tell you where you were, pilots relied on a handful of methods that built on each other. Each one was a tool, and a good pilot knew when to reach for which.


Pilotage: flying by what you see


Pilotage is the simplest idea in all of navigation. You look outside, you find a landmark, and you match it to your chart. A river bend. A highway. A lake. A town with a water tower.


Here in Middle Tennessee we are spoiled for good landmarks. Percy Priest Lake makes a shape you cannot mistake from the air. Interstate 24 runs like a ribbon across the ground. The Cumberland River winds through Nashville in a way that looks exactly like it does on the sectional chart. Once you learn to read the ground, the whole landscape becomes a map you can fly.


Dead reckoning: flying by math and time


Pilotage works great when you can see the ground. But what about long stretches of sameness, or haze that washes out the horizon? That is where dead reckoning comes in.


Dead reckoning is navigation by calculation. Before you take off, you figure your heading, your speed, and your time between points. If you know you are flying 100 miles per hour and your next checkpoint is 25 miles away, you know it should arrive in about 15 minutes. When the clock says 15 minutes and there is your checkpoint, you smile, because the math worked.


Dead reckoning is just this: know your speed, know your time, and trust the numbers you worked out on the ground.

VORs: following the radio beams


Then came a network of ground based radio stations called VORs. A VOR sends out signals that let your airplane's instruments show whether you are left or right of a chosen course to or from that station. String a few together and you could fly across the whole country by hopping from one VOR to the next, like stepping stones across a creek.


VORs are older technology now, but they are still out there, and student pilots still learn to use them. They are a reliable backup, and knowing how they work teaches you something important about how radio navigation thinks.


Why do we still teach the old way if GPS exists?


This is the question we get from just about every new student, usually while they are staring at a glass cockpit that seems to do everything for them. If the airplane can draw a magenta line straight to the destination, why bother learning charts and stopwatches?


Here is the real answer.


Technology fails, and pilots do not get to.


A GPS can lose signal. A screen can go dark. An electrical problem can take your fancy displays with it. When that happens at 4,500 feet over Rutherford County, the pilot who learned only to follow the magenta line has a problem. The pilot who learned pilotage and dead reckoning simply looks outside, finds the interstate, checks the clock, and keeps flying calmly to the airport.


There is a deeper reason too. Learning the fundamentals builds the mental picture that makes you a good pilot. When you understand wind, heading, groundspeed, and time in your bones, the GPS stops being magic and starts being a tool you supervise. You catch its mistakes instead of blindly trusting them.


The goal is not to fly like it is 1955. The goal is to understand your flight so completely that no single gadget can lose you.

What does learning to navigate actually feel like?


Let us take you into the cockpit for a moment, because this is where it clicks.


On your first cross country lessons, we sit down together at the table before we ever preflight. You spread out a sectional chart. You draw a line from Smyrna to your destination. You measure the distance, pick checkpoints along the way, and write down your headings and times. You check the weather and figure how the wind will push you off course, then adjust for it.


Then you fly it. And the first time your checkpoint appears out the windshield right when your pencil said it would, something changes in you. You realize you are not a passenger being carried along. You are navigating. You planned this, and it worked.


That feeling is one of the best parts of learning to fly, and no app can give it to you. You have to earn it.


How do modern tools fit into training?


We are not anti technology. Far from it. Good GPS, moving maps, and traffic awareness systems have made flying safer, and we teach students to use them well. The trick is teaching them in the right order.


  • First the foundation: reading charts, pilotage, dead reckoning, and basic radio navigation, so you always have a backup living in your own head.

  • Then the technology: using GPS and glass displays as tools that reduce your workload, not tools that replace your judgment.

  • Always the cross check: comparing what the screen says to what your eyes and your plan say, so you notice quickly when something is wrong.


A pilot who does it in that order gets the best of both eras. You get the calm competence of the old timers and the situational awareness of modern equipment. That is a wonderful combination to have when you are flying your family somewhere on a Saturday.


What can today's students learn from yesterday's pilots?


When you read about the pilots who crossed oceans and continents with paper, pencils, and grit, it is easy to feel like they were made of tougher stuff. Maybe they were. But mostly they just mastered the fundamentals and trusted their training.


That is available to you too. The same discipline that got a pilot across the country in 1950 is the discipline we build in you on a short cross country to a nearby airport. Plan carefully. Fly the plan. Stay ahead of the airplane. Notice when something does not add up, and have a backup ready. Make good decisions early, while you still have plenty of options.


Those habits do not just help you navigate. They make you the kind of pilot who handles surprises well, because you have practiced thinking ahead instead of reacting late.


Is any of this hard to learn?


Not as hard as you might think. Every private pilot who ever earned a certificate learned this material, and most of them were ordinary people with jobs and families and busy lives. It comes one lesson at a time. First you learn to read a chart. Then you learn to hold a heading. Then you plan a short trip. Then you fly it. Each piece is small and reachable.


Keep in mind that specific requirements, training minimums, and the details of what a checkride covers do change over time, so your instructor and the current FAA standards are always the right place to confirm the particulars. But the heart of it, the joy of finding your way through the sky, has not changed at all.


So how did they ever get there? The same way you will. One checkpoint at a time, with a plan in hand and the ground unrolling below.
