Do Student Pilots Have to Talk to Air Traffic Control? A Middle Tennessee Primer

The FAA is spending a lot of money right now to modernize the network that connects air traffic controllers across the country. The technical details are for engineers, but the headline is a good one for anyone learning to fly: the system that keeps airplanes safely separated keeps getting better.


That news got us talking on the ramp here in Smyrna. Not about telecom contracts, but about the thing on the other end of all that infrastructure. The voice in your headset. Because if we had to name the single biggest fear new students carry into their first lesson, it would not be stalls or landings. It would be the radio.


Almost every student is more nervous about talking than about flying. Almost every one of them gets over it.

Do you actually have to talk to ATC to learn to fly?


Here is the honest answer: sometimes yes, sometimes no, and either way it is nothing to be afraid of.


Whether you talk to air traffic control depends on where you are flying. The country is divided into different kinds of airspace, and the rules for radio contact change depending on which kind you are in. Some airports have a control tower with real controllers directing traffic. Many small airports do not, and pilots simply announce their own positions to each other on a shared frequency.


We are lucky in Middle Tennessee to have both, sometimes within the same flight.


Smyrna has a control tower


Smyrna Airport, KMQY, has an operating control tower. That means from your very first lessons, you will hear us working with controllers to taxi, take off, and land. It sounds like a lot at first. But the tower here handles a healthy mix of training airplanes, business traffic, and weekend flyers, and the controllers are used to student pilots. They hear us every day.


Some airports have no tower at all


Fly a short distance out to a smaller field and there may be no tower. Instead, pilots use something called a common traffic advisory frequency, where everyone announces what they are doing. You become your own coordinator. It teaches you to build a picture in your head of where the other airplanes are, just from listening.


The busy Nashville airspace is nearby


Nashville International sits just to our west, wrapped in busier, more structured airspace. You do not have to fly into the big airport to be a good pilot, but learning near it means you get comfortable with more advanced radio work and with staying clear of areas that require specific clearance. That is a real advantage of training here.


What does ATC actually do for you?


It helps to understand what controllers are for, because their whole job is to help.


Think of air traffic control like the staff at a very busy restaurant. They are not there to judge how you order. They are there to make sure two parties do not get seated at the same table, that everyone gets where they are going, and that the whole place runs smoothly. Controllers separate traffic, pass along important information, and give you a hand when you need one.


A few of the things they do for you as a student:


  • Tell you when it is safe to take off and land

  • Point out other traffic near you so you can spot it

  • Provide safe routing through or around busy airspace

  • Relay weather and runway information

  • Give you help immediately if something ever goes wrong


A controller is not a test you have to pass. A controller is a teammate.


Why is the radio so intimidating at first?


Because it is a new language, spoken quickly, with its own rhythm and vocabulary. When you first put on the headset, the chatter sounds like a foreign broadcast played at double speed.


Here is the part that surprises people. Aviation radio is actually designed to be simple. There are standard phrases for standard situations. Once you learn the pattern, you realize most transmissions follow the same basic recipe: who you are calling, who you are, where you are, and what you want.


Say you are leaving Smyrna. A first call to ground control might be as simple as telling them your aircraft, your location on the field, and that you are ready to taxi for a lesson in the practice area. That is it. The words feel clumsy in your mouth for a week or two, and then one day they just come out.


Nobody is born knowing how to talk on the radio. It is a skill, which means it is learnable.

How do we teach you to handle it?


We do not throw you to the wolves. Radio work is layered in gradually, the same way we build every other skill.


We talk first, then you listen


Early on, your instructor handles most of the radio while you fly the airplane. You get to just listen and absorb the rhythm without the pressure of speaking. It is amazing how much your ear picks up in those first few hours.


You start with the easy calls


Then we hand you the simpler transmissions, the ones that repeat every flight. Requesting taxi. Reporting your position in the traffic pattern. You build a small library of calls you can make without thinking hard about them.


We practice on the ground too


Some of the best radio practice happens with the engine off. We rehearse calls out loud, we listen to real air traffic together, and we talk through what to say before you ever key the microphone in flight. By the time it counts, you have already said the words a dozen times.


And here is the secret pros use


If you ever get flustered and forget a phrase, you can key up and say what you need in plain English. Controllers would much rather hear a clear, plain sentence than perfect phrasing that leaves out what matters. Even seasoned airline pilots occasionally just say it plainly. That safety net never goes away.


What if you say the wrong thing?


You will. Every pilot has. We have keyed the mic and gone completely blank. We have called the wrong runway and been gently corrected. The world kept turning.


Here is what actually happens when you fumble a call: the controller repeats it, or asks you to say again, and you try once more. There is no penalty, no red mark, no embarrassment that lingers. The frequency moves on in seconds.


What matters far more than sounding smooth is being safe and being clear. A controller would rather have a student who speaks slowly and honestly than one who rattles off jargon and misses the point. Good communication is really just good decision making with a microphone attached. Say what you need. Listen to what you are told. Ask when you are unsure.


Confidence on the radio is not something you have or lack. It is something you earn, one transmission at a time.


How long until it feels natural?


Sooner than you think. For most students, the radio goes from terrifying to routine within the first several lessons. By the time you are ready to fly on your own, keying the mic feels about as dramatic as making a phone call.


The big investments the FAA is making in the ATC system are a good reminder of something we sometimes forget when we are nervous. There is an entire network of people and technology built to help you fly safely. Controllers, radios, radar, all of it exists to keep you and everyone else in the sky protected. When you talk to ATC, you are not being tested. You are plugging into a system that has your back.


So if the radio is the thing holding you back, let it go. Every pilot who ever flew out of Smyrna started out mangling their first call.
